The Age of Stupid

Franny Armstrong, whose previous documentary, Maclibel, looked at the unacceptable face of corporatism, has given us an in-your-face look at the most pressing problem facing the world today. Starring Oscar winner Pete Postlethwaite as The Archivist, the film tells the stories of a disparate group of individuals around the world and their understanding of the climate crisis.

Using a sci-fi base to string the stories together Armstrong shows us an octogenarian French climbing guide bemoaning the disappearance of his beloved glaciers; a Nigerian woman from the richest oil producing area of Africa selling black market diesel because there is nothing in the gas stations; an English wind turbine designer battling suburban “greenie” protesters; an Indian entrepreneur setting up another cheap airline; and an unrepentant oil executive forced to confront his losses, and responsibilities in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

All of the characters tell their own stories. The only comments come from Postlethwaite's sad-eyed survivor. By interspersing the stories with news clips such as the American Secretary of State stating that climate change is real and and futuristic clips such as London under water, Armstrong forces us to look at the very real possibility that as the Archivist says "we weren't the first species to drive ourselves into extinction, but we were the first who knew what we were doing". The obvious comparison for this film is Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. But this documentary is punchier and less down home folksy than the genial Mr Gore. The Age of Stupid assumes that we are all aware of the facts that have been shown to us over and over again for the last decade at least. It accentuates the huge differences in consumption between the first and third worlds. But most of all it asks the question :

What are you going to do about it?

And that perhaps is the most frightening part of the movie. It is obvious that when the oil companies use the same lobbyists that the tobacco companies used that we cannot expect the governments of the world to do much. The Copenhagen climate talks will be more of the same old stuff we have been watching since Kyoto. Some of the world's leaders will make noises about voluntary reductions which will be ignored by most countries, especially the worst polluters. Governments will continue to line their own pockets and those of their corporatefriends.

It has become the job of the people to make changes in their lifestyles. Buy your food from local suppliers. Reject overpackaging and the non-recyclable. Develop the skills that you will need to survive when the system on which we all rely devours itself. Take the healthier and cheaper options. Walk or take the bus whenever possible. Grow your own food as much as you can. Reduce your imprint. Our children deserve a world to grow up in.

I'll have to check out the movie. It's amazing that there's still a debate going on about this. Thanks for writing.

William it's not in the interests of big business to do anything about global warming apparently. Obviously those guys with the megabucks have a spare planet up their sleeves. For the rest of us, we just have to dig in and reuse, recycle, switch off, grow food and hope that even the most benign forecasts of global warming have it wrong. Highly unlikely, given that around 90% of the scientific community accept that a major global climate change is now going on. But do check out the movie. You can buy it through the link above and I am not even getting a commission for this one.

I don't think too many will join the cause now after what has taken place recently with those emails that have been released. I think we in America have come a looong ways in certain areas, like improving our dumps, but I have always wondered about the effect of all those space launches, jet exhausts and such. Warfare takes its toll also.

Thanks for the comment CC. There are always reasons not to get involved. The USA has made some steps but it still ranks as the biggest polluter outright and per capita in the world. NZ isn't far behind on the per capita rating. It seems to be obvious to me - we can't just keep wrecking and dumping the place where we live

It's not as if we all can pack up our picnic basket and go somewhere else is it? I knew it years ago when recycling, green living etc wasn't fashionable yet that all that messing about was going to come back and bite us in the watoosy. But there really is no excuse anymore most of us are aware now of all the damage that was done and is still being committed now... yeah so what are we all going to do about it? We all need to work at it a small bit by many will give us a lot and possibly hope that the wrongs can be righted.

Love this great hub Cally,

I feel a little put out suddenly being fashionable. I spent years going against the grain and trying to convince everyone to reuse, recycle and cut down. I'm pleased more people are doing it, but what am I going to rebel against now? "Whaddaya got?" I think Marlon would say :)

We are on a downward slope as a species. Even a zoo cage has to cleaned out every once in a while lest it become deeply and thickly buried in the poop and urine of the animals living within.

It's about time for us to clean out our own cage, aka Planet Earth.

Cheers!

Trouble is Chef Jeff, who is going to be considered as the detritus at the bottom of the cage? I have a feeling it will be the poorer nations of Africa, Asia and South America again. That will only build up further resentment against the West - they may decide to do a little cleaning of their own.

The poor have the most to lose - i.e. their lives. All we have to give up in the west are a few creature comforts, and if we actually find green energy sources on an individual basis, we could still maintain a pretty decent life style. But so many people with something are just afraid of losing what is theirs, not at all concerned with what is ours.

The cage needs to be cleaned out by us, and we need to make sure all the creatures living within are cleaned up and given their own chance for life while we're in the process. But Iam sure we will find a way to deny the poorer nations their due. That is what we are best at, it seems, in this corporate culture of ours.

Cheers!

With the governments copping out again at Copenhagen it really does look like we will have to take responsibility for ourselves and do whatever we can as individuals. Thanks for dropping by Jeff.
